LOCAL - CUMBERLAND COUNTY

  • As of 2015, a total of 5243 people have utilized services for domestic violence (including sexual violence) at Autumn House since it opened in 1990.

  • So far, 150 people have accessed services from Autumn House (Amherst, NS) in 2016.

 

PROVINCIAL - NOVA SCOTIA

​

  • In 2011, a total of 708 sexual assault incidents in Nova Scotia were reported to the police, where 98% were level 1 sexual assault. [women.gov.ns]

  • Police-reported data for Nova Scotia indicate that, in 2011, 82% of victims of sexual assault were female while 97% of suspects were male.[women.gov.ns]

  • The majority of police-reported sexual assaults in Nova Scotia in 2009 included fondling, kissing, unwanted touching or grabbing. [women.gov.ns]

 

NATIONAL - CANADA

  • Surveys show that approximately 9/10 (88%) of sexual trauma are not reported [statcan]

  • In 2002, women accounted for 85% of victims of sexual offences reported to a sample of police services [statcan]

  • Children and adults with disabilities are particularly at risk for becoming victims of sexual abuse or assault [statcan]

  • 40% of women with disabilities have been assaulted, sexually assaulted, or abused in some way [statcan]

  • In the vast majority of crimes of sexual assault, the accused is known to the victim (in 80% of sexual offences in 2002). Two fifths of all victims (41%) were assaulted by an acquaintance, 10% by a friend, 28% by a family member, and the remaining 20% were victimized by a stranger. [statcan]

  • An Ontario-based study of trans people found that 20 per cent of people identifying as LGBTQ had experienced physical or sexual assault due to their identity, and that 34 per cent were subjected to verbal threats or harassment [rainbowhouseontario]

GLOBAL - OUR WORLD

 

  • 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced physical or sexual violence – mostly by an intimate partner [unwomen]

  • In 2012, 1 in 2 women killed worldwide were killed by their partners or family. Only 1 in 20 of all men killed were killed in such circumstances [unwomen​]

  • 2/3 of all countries have outlawed domestic violence [unwomen​]

  • 32 countries exempt rape perpetrators from prosecution when they are married to or subsequently marry the victim [unwomen​]

  • 4.5 million of the estimated 21 million people in forced labour are victims of sexual exploitation

    • 98% of them are women and girls [unwomen​]

  • In 2010, studies in the United State showed that:

    • ​44 percent of lesbians and 61 percent of bisexual women experience rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner, compared to 35 percent of heterosexual women

    • 26 percent of gay men and 37 percent of bisexual men experience rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner, compared to 29 percent of heterosexual men

    • 46 percent of bisexual women have been raped, compared to 17 percent of heterosexual women and 13 percent of lesbians

    • 22 percent of bisexual women have been raped by an intimate partner, compared to 9 percent of heterosexual women

    • 40 percent of gay men and 47 percent of bisexual men have experienced sexual violence other than rape, compared to 21 percent of heterosexual men [humanrightscampaign]
