Was your loved one affected by sexual violence? Do you want to help, but you’re not quite sure how?
-
Believe him or her
-
Offer practical support, like helping out with tasks that may be overwhelming to the survivor
-
Validate the emotions that your loved one tells you about
-
Avoid relying on them to help you process what you feel as a result of the sexual assault
-
Encourage the survivor to seek medical attention – offer to go with them
-
Let them know that you are available to talk, when they are ready
-
Respect their boundaries – physically, sexually and emotionally
-
Remember to take care of yourself too – this affects you too.
